PTFE is the preeminent choice for fluropolymer lining, though alternatives such as FEP, PFA, ECTFE, and PVDF are also widely used.
PTFE lined pipes and tanks offer a cost-efficient and durable solution for extreme conditions involving the conveyance or storage of highly corrosive fluids. The chemically inert PTFE lining effectively withstands corrosive substances, operating at elevated pressures and temperatures up to a remarkable 230°C. This resilience is achieved while utilizing the structural advantage of the underlying pipe materials.
The strategic advantage of using PTFE is its ability to prolong the lifespan of pipes while mitigating the risk of catastrophic failures. Such failures could lead to substantial damage to pipes and their surroundings, resulting in escalated replacement costs, halted operations, and critical occupational health and safety hazards by exposing personnel to harmful corrosive substances like acids.
Over time, metal pipes like carbon steel or stainless steel are vulnerable to corrosion when transporting aggressive liquids such as acids. To combat this, PTFE lining is meticulously manufactured to fit snugly inside the pipe, providing an enduring barrier against corrosion.
PTFE Lining Process
Fluoro Pacific expertly provides PTFE-lined pipes tailored to customer specifications. The advanced manufacturing process involves heating a PTFE cylinder, then extruding and inserting it into the pipe. Typically, the PTFE tube is slightly larger in diameter than the pipe itself; as a thermoset plastic, it will contract to fit tightly once tension is released, resulting in an immovable fit. Excess PTFE at either end is expertly flared, with the PTFE being heated and compressed against the face of the pipe flange. This is then secured with metallic bolts, compressing the flared edges to ensure a tight seal for elongation or connection to other metal surfaces.
